Stuff I’ve done before
Theatre tech work
I have worked as a theatre stage technician before: I started out as part of the tech crew at high school in Manchester. During my final year of sixth form, I was head of the tech crew, and ran a crew of around 10 pupils. Typical work included maintenance of lights + sound equipment, rigging of the gear, designing lighting rigs and so forth.
Once I had completed my sixth form I was asked to work as the theatre technician at Withington Girls’ School, Manchester. I was also responsible for taking care of the reprographics department, including maintaining the photocopiers around the school. I managed two performance spaces and took care of day-to-day duties involved in running productions to a budget, and working within a larger establishment.
Freelance Work
Past work includes graphic design for Leeds City Council, activity workshop leader for a monthly childrens’ environmentally aware club, real-time tweeting and event coverage. More recently I have been running podcast workshops for 11-16 year olds, showing them how to devise, record and make their own shows. I also run arts and crafts workshops for children and parents helping them to work together and be creative.
Live sound engineering
Alongside my theatre work I have also set up and operated PA systems for live music events, ranging from DJ rigs to music events with many different bands playing. I have undertaken health and safety training and am competent at handling and setting up professional audio equipment.
Higher education
After a year working as theatre technician I moved to Leeds to study ‘creative sound + music technology’ at Leeds Met. My final year project involved working with Leeds City Council and completing a piece of commissioned sonic art installation work with my friend Chris that was installed at Canal Wharf, Leeds in October 2008.
Since leaving university I have given several presentations and talks to students, as well as delegates at conferences across the UK. I am also a mentor for recent graduates at the Old Broadcasting House as part of the NTI’s scheme for helping new freelancers.
Music workshops
Since 2005 I have worked at an annual week long summer workshop in Manchester for 8-13 year olds. My involvement included being responsible for a group of around 25 children – ensuring that they are in the right place at the right time, are enjoying themselves and encouraging them to get involved with the activities. I also helped out with the technical set up of equipment for a performance at the end of the week.
